The Local Economies of the Future

By Dunn Eggink

Why is the economic crisis worrying us? Because we need money to buy things and pay our bills. If it's harder to make money to pay our bills and buy things that we need, then there's a problem. What do we do about it? Find new ways to make money of course. But this time of being creative and making new money streams is deceptive. The real solution to living in the economic crisis is working with others, literally. Combine forces. Network. But, most importantly buy local goods, from your own town or county whenever possible. Especially your food. Simply speaking, the economic crisis has less impact on locally based economies. When we grow our food near where we live, and someone down the road makes our soap, and our toilet paper comes from the county paper recycling plant then our money is going directly to supporting the prosperity of the community where we live. The more our money and resources get recirculated through our local communities, the less we will be effected by up and downs in the national and international trade economy. The problem is that we don't make enough basic necessities in our own home towns, and we have a hard time finding employment with locally based businesses. As we make an effort to support and take part in developing local flourishing economies, soon our communities will have "their own" and in turn, something to share with neighboring towns and counties.

Local Food Networks

If you don't have a garden, you should either start planting, start helping someone who has a garden or at least support local organic gardeners by buying food from them. We need food. We also need water, which is even more scarce. If you don't have running clean water nearby, you might consider making a way to generate electricity, so that you can run your pump. if you live in a city, you should seriously think about moving. And when you move, be ready to be a help wherever you go.

We have a lot to learn about how to work together as a family, but love, compassion and humility are crucial motivations to cherish and uphold. Needless to say in this time of hardship a lot of hippy values will come in handy. If you have any significant income, start investing in things like water filters, water distillers, camping supplies, medical supplies and nonperishable food. We are about to go through the biggest rapid transformation of society that we have ever known to happen in history. There's no telling who will survive or how, but one thing is for sure. The more we share, the better our hearts will be and thus, the better our mental state will be.

Thanks. Now if I can just get started on actually doing it. Right now all I'm doing is buying local food and getting involved in making my friends gardens.
